Friendships Can Save Your Life as You Age

“Friends can strengthen our immune system, help us recover more quickly from illness, sharpen our memory and even help us live longer.” That is from an article on Aetna.com by Bonnie Vengrow. And all you have to do is see good friends together and you will know that it is true.

I just finished watching the latest episodes of “Grace and Frankie”, the Netflix series staring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston. It is remarkable that a series has been made starring four people who are each 70+ years old. It is a marvelous show, which takes a look at life as we age in a humorous way without being condescending. These are people with full lives. They have complex relationships and are not always the nicest people.

But they are good friends. And it is a fabulous reminder that it is worth the time and effort to cultivate new friendships as we age and to continue to nurture our long-term friendships with the people who have known us the longest.

So do your cardiovascular system a favor and call a friend today and watch Grace and Frankie together. Your blood pressure will thank you!
